Steven C. Batterman, Ph.D. (1937 – 2021) was a Professor Emeritus in the School of Engineering and Applied Science and School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA at the time of his death and was the first engineer in the world to be elected president of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS).

Over the course of his continuous 33-year tenure at the University of Pennsylvania, in addition to his primary appointments in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Dr. Batterman also held secondary appointments as a Professor of Biomechanics in the School of Veterinary Medicine and as Professor of Bioengineering in Orthopaedic Surgery (School of Medicine). Dr. Batterman’s areas of expertise included accident reconstruction, occupant kinematics, vehicle dynamics, biomechanics, mechanics of human injury, crashworthiness, restraint systems, product liability, safety engineering, and human factors. He had additional expertise in mechanics of solids and structures, including stress analysis, buckling and stability; failure analysis; structural dynamics; impact; and mechanical and structural design.  Dr. Batterman held numerous academic honors and awards, published extensively, and enjoyed international recognition as an engineering consultant and one of the leading forensic engineers of our time. Sadly, Dr. Steven Batterman passed away in July of 2021.
